Finding a therapist can feel a little easier when you get to know the person behind the bio. Meet Rachel Millan, LPC, a therapist at Calm Mind Therapy who brings warmth, curiosity, and her authentic self into every session. We asked Rachel five questions about what brought her to this work, what it’s like to sit across from her, and what she enjoys outside the therapy room. From making space for life’s hardest moments to getting creative with her latest hobby, here’s a little more about Rachel.
What inspired you to become a therapist?
My own life experiences led me to become a therapist. When I was 20, my family experienced a significant loss. Seeing all of us process our grief in different ways was both heartbreaking and beautiful. I decided I wanted to be the person who sits across from people during similar moments of hardship. It's in these moments that we recognize our resilience, vulnerabilities, strengths, and shared humanness.
How would you describe your therapy style, and what do you hope clients feel when working with you?
I would describe my style as warm, authentic, and exploratory. In each session, I do my best to create a safe, comfortable space for my clients. I show up as my true self and encourage them to do the same. Once we establish that foundation, we can explore who they are, what shapes them, and how they want to continue growing.
What concerns or life experiences do you especially enjoy helping clients navigate?
I love working with clients who are deeply curious about themselves. Sometimes that curiosity is sparked by a significant life change or a profound loss where you're suddenly faced with new challenges and big emotions. Other times, it just hits you on a random Tuesday afternoon that you want to feel more in touch with who you are as a human being! Either way, I love helping people feel more mindful, confident, and capable in their daily lives.
What’s something you enjoy outside of work that might surprise your clients?
I am a total hobby-hopper! I have so many interests and tend to go through different phases every few months. Right now, I'm in a coloring phase. I have the fancy alcohol markers, aesthetic books, and fun gel pens. I get very into the fine details and technique of it all! I’m currently working on a Wizard of Oz themed page!
What would you say to someone who wants to start therapy but feels nervous about reaching out?
Having sat on both sides of the couch, I know firsthand how intimidating starting therapy can feel. Know that we will move at whatever pace feels safest for you. Whether that means we chat about sports and reality TV for five minutes or five sessions, creating a safe space is my top priority. There is absolutely no pressure to be anything but your authentic self and I promise to do the same. We are literally just two humans sitting across from each other!
